About the Presenter

Lou Lasprugato is an internationally recognized trainer and behavioral health provider. He’s a licensed Marriage and Family Therapist, with private practices in both California and Virginia (United States), and Peer-Reviewed Trainer in Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) with the Association for Contextual Behavioral Science, for which he also serves as chair of the Training Committee. Lou has worked as a psychotherapist in a variety of settings, including an intensive outpatient program at Kaiser Permanente that he subsequently managed, and an integrative medicine program at Sutter Health. Lou has taught mindfulness meditation to health care practitioners and facilitated dozens of training events on ACT and Relational Frame Theory (RFT), as well as co-created courses on nutritional psychology and integrative mental health.  Lou has also provided supervision to other mental health professionals and continues to provide individual consultation on ACT and other contextual behavioral approaches. He earned his Master of Arts in Counseling Psychology, with a specialization in Holistic Studies from Lesley University, Cambridge, MA, following a career as a professional musician.

The Acceptance and Commitment Therapy/Training (ACT) model has some complexities that can make it challenging for practitioners to fully grasp and effectively implement in their work with clients. To meet this challenge, user-friendly methods and tools have been developed over the years within the ACT community. One such tool is the Choice Point, which presents a frame of reference and metaphor for discriminating between workable (psychologically flexible) and unworkable (psychologically inflexible) behaviors in a given context. The ABC Choice Point is an adapted version that brings more explicit attention to contextual variables that give rise to and maintain behavior. From this functional assessment, practitioners can more easily detect and target core ACT processes at play in a client’s repertoire and derive process-based interventions and treatment goals that promote psychological flexibility.

In this 2-hour webinar/workshop, participants will first be familiarized with a few core principles that underlie and inform an ACT-based approach. The ABC Choice Point will then be introduced, including key interventions (“the standards”) that evoke an ongoing functional analysis guided by workability. Through the use of a demonstration and partnered breakout sessions, participants will have opportunities to practice making use of the ABC Choice Point while detecting and targeting ACT core processes of change.

Learning Objectives

  1. Discriminate between behavior under aversive vs. appetitive control with respect to psychological flexibility
  2. Demonstrate how to the use the ABC Choice Point as a frame of reference for functional analysis in Acceptance and Commitment Therapy
  3. Detect core processes in the functional relations of the ABC Choice Point
  4. Derive ACT interventions from the ABC Choice Point to promote psychological flexibility
