Abstract
Components: Didactic presentation, demonstration, role play
Target audience: Intermediate to Advanced
Stock exercises from Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) that help clinicians introduce new repertoires and promote psychological flexibility abound. However, practicing ACT organically and functionally can remain challenging for many clinicians. Knowing how, when, and why to use functional interventions that shape behavior in the moment and over time can be undermined by our efforts in trying to remember the perfect metaphor or adhere to a particular protocol.
This 2-hour webinar, facilitated by peer-reviewed ACT trainer Lou Lasprugato, will focus on developing a contextual behavioral approach that aims to shape psychological flexibility in clinical exchanges. The processes of modeling, evoking, and reinforcing will be delineated from the perspectives of ACT’s behavior analytic roots and modern contextual behavioral research. Multiple exemplars of these processes with respect to the three pillars of ACT – openness, awareness, and engagement – will be demonstrated. Attendees will then have the opportunity to practice shaping psychological flexibility in small group breakout sessions.
Learning Objectives
-
Describe and demonstrate how to model openness, awareness, and engagement in clinical exchanges
-
Describe and demonstrate how to evoke clinically relevant behavior with respect to the psychological flexibility model
-
Describe and demonstrate how to reinforce psychological flexibility occurring within and outside of session
