Connections Behavior Planning and Intervention is excited to welcome Emily Wilson, BCBA, for a webinar for Behavior Analysts! This event will address treatment teams as complex and sensitive systems, centering on the client’s individual needs.

Abstract

When asked “why do you do this work?” typical responses include the behavior analyst’s commitment to supporting and uplifting marginalized populations. Evaluating whether we are achieving that goal requires a comprehensive assessment of the impact of our interventions, intended and unintended, for all parties involved. In this webinar, we will address treatment teams as complex and sensitive systems, centering on the client’s individual needs. In pediatric service provision, while a team may include a variety of professionals, caregivers always play an essential role in effective support and intervention. Caregivers are decision-makers. Incorporating the “soft skills” required to orient treatment team members to viewpoints they may not otherwise consider, such as client assent & self-advocacy, can present a challenge for clinicians. Assent refers to enthusiastic participation in an activity. If assent is present, it’s clear to any observer that the learner finds instruction engaging and is happy to be present for it. All treatment team members can benefit from attending to the feedback their learner provides on an ongoing basis. Taking a systematic approach to understanding assent, withdrawal, and self-advocacy—and competently disseminating that information to all members of a treatment team—ensures that behavior analysts are aligning our committed action with our collective value to support and uplift our service recipients.

About the Presenter

Emily Wilson’s behavior analytic practice is built on a diverse foundation of interests in the liberal arts and sciences. As an undergraduate at James Madison University, she studied Sociology with a minor in Religion.  She is involved in politics and social activism.  The daughter of a mental health counselor and an educator, she also routinely draws inspiration from evidence-based practices in parallel fields.  She got her first job in Applied Behavior Analysis in 2012 and earned her master’s degree and board certification in 2016. Beyond the BCBA, Emily has additional training and experience in a variety of subject areas, including Precision Teaching, Organizational Behavior Management, Motivational Interviewing, Acceptance and Commitment Training, feeding interventions, as well as instruction on implementing several ABA-based assessment tools.  She is certified to provide Early Intervention services in Virginia.  Emily is also a Certified Clinical Trauma Specialist-Individual (CCTSI).  Her diverse learning history is reflected in her clinical approach, which relies on a wide lens assessment to ultimately develop focused supportive interventions.

  1. Identify socially significant goals based on individual preferences and priorities
  2. Describe strategies to help caregivers align their behavior with their values as they relate to the client’s treatment goals
  3. Explain why ongoing client assent is important
  4. Describe what to do when assent is withdrawn
