Abstract:
The developmental status of the individual is a critical consideration for behavior analysts who are developing treatment and intervention goals, both as relates to building skills, as well as responding to behaviors that compromise success and independence. While standardized assessment is not typically within the scope of our behavior analytic practice (e.g., “IQ testing”), an appreciation of human development informs our decisions regarding the intervention goals, approaches, and supports. In this two-part workshop, we will focus on the state of the science in developmental research in two key areas.
In Part One, we will investigate cognitive development, including language development, executive functioning, and emotional regulation.
In Part Two, we will turn our attention to attachment, social development, and peer relations. In both parts, an emphasis will be placed on identifying developmental readiness in children and youth, particularly those with developmental and learning disabilities (e.g., autism spectrum disorder, intellectual disability.
About the Presenter:
Dr. Daniel W. Mruzek, BCBA-D, received his doctoral training in Psychology at the Ohio State University and is a former Program Director at the Groden Center in Providence, Rhode Island. He has been a researcher on several externally funded intervention studies, including controlled trials of an innovative toilet training method for children with autism that employs an Apple OS – based app and manualized intervention that he and colleagues developed. Dan has authored and co-authored more than twenty peer-reviewed articles and book chapters on autism and other developmental disabilities, including chapters in the popular text, Making Inclusion Work for Students with Autism Spectrum Disorder: An Evidence-Based Guideand the APA Parent Training for Autism Spectrum Disorder. He has been a longtime member of the faculty in the Applied Behavior Analysis program at the University of Rochester Warner School of Education. He has also served on the editorial board for the journals Focus on Autism and Other Developmental Disabilities, Journal of Child Psychology and Psychiatry, and Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities, and is a “Top Ten” contributor to the Autism Speaks Got Questions? blog site for families and practitioners. Dan is a coauthor of two instruments published by Pro-Ed Publishers, Inc., the Developmental Assessment for Individuals with Severe Disabilities and the Adaptive Behavior Diagnostic Scale. He is a popular community presenter and has provided staff trainings with agencies internationally for more than two decades.
Learning Objectives:
SESSION 1:
- Describe the cognitive and neurodevelopmental underpinnings of language development, including factors that affect acquisition of language, an integration of Skinner’s “verbal behavior” with the science of cognitive development, language milestones, and assessment for intervention planning.
- Describe the development of executive functioning skills, including attending, set-shifting, initiation, inhibitory control, planning, and working memory, as well as an appreciation of how our considerations of executive functioning may inform our treatment goals and strategies.
- Describe the state of the science regarding emotional development, including the physiological and cognitive aspects, how the environment shapes on emotional responding, and emotional milestones.
SESSION 2:
- Describe attachment theory in relation to social communication and other relational behaviors.
- Describe social learning theory and implications for developing repertoires of behavior, including as related to peer relations.
- Describe patterns of play development and implications for intervention.
- Describe variables that affect the development of friendship skills and peer acceptance.
