Connections Behavior Planning and Intervention is excited to present a Continuing Education webinar for Behavior Analysts!
Abstract:
Avoidant Restrictive Food Intake Disorder (ARFID) co-occurs in about 75% of children with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD). ARFID’s main area for assessment and intervention for behavior analysts are mealtime behaviors, including food refusal, limited variety, and poor oral intake. Ecological assessment (see Cooper, Heron and Heward, 2020) allows the evaluator to gather much needed information about mealtime environments to identify contributing factors to feeding behaviors. This webinar will present how to match that information to appropriate and current interventions and the research basis for these interventions. The webinar will be directed to home-based and outpatient-based behavior analysts and will review ethical issues in feeding practice in these settings.
Learning Objectives:
- Apply ecological assessment methods to a feeding evaluation
- Match 2 specific feeding behavioral concerns with 2 specific behavior analysis concepts (matching treatment to function)
- Evaluate child assessment and intervention data to attempt to predict when and why certain behavior analysis interventions may not work
About the Presenter:
Dr. Kimberly Brown is a licensed psychologist who has worked with children and families struggling with Pediatric Feeding Disorders for over 30 years. She received her PhD from University of Iowa in 1998 in Applied Behavior Analysis, and completed her pre- and post-doctoral training at the Kennedy Krieger Institute. She has been Director of Outpatient Feeding Psychology at Mount Washington Pediatric Hospital (Baltimore, MD 2004-2006), Director of the Inpatient Feeding Program at Nationwide Children’s Hospital (Columbus, OH 2006-2007), and Director of the Pediatric Feeding Disorders Outpatient Program at Golisano Children’s Hospital (Rochester, NY 2011-2023). Her feeding experiences have included inpatient, day treatment, outpatient, home and school settings. She has also acquired knowledge about medical, oral motor and sensory issues related to feeding through work on collaborative care teams. She has expertise in how feeding disorders are affected by food allergies and GI diseases (e.g., eosinophilic esophagitis). Dr. Brown has participated in an NIH grant developing parent training for feeding, and expanded on this work developing educational curriculum for parents in outpatient therapy. She is currently in private practice in New York State, providing family therapy, training and consultation for those dealing with Pediatric Feeding Disorders (specifically, Avoidant Restrictive Food Intake Disorder).
