Abstract:

Behavior analysts and therapeutic professionals need to know how the buffer and barrier approach can transform policy and practice. But at its core, buffers theory offers a way to transform people, relying on engineering the behavioral practices and environments that make up our lives and surroundings. This engineering takes an investment, but it may pay off in such dividends as transforming our understanding of “medical contributions to behaviors” and ways to monitor and document some of them (see Ethics Code Item 2.12); tracking our personal biases and challenges especially in terms of mental and physical health conditions and relationships (Ethics Code Item 1.10); and how to radically reduce our propensity to coerce and exploit others (see 1.13).

Attendees of this event will hear personal stories while exploring their own story through tools (some published, some novel) that ultimately will benefit our clients and their caregivers and staff. But first, we’ll focus on the importance and ethical imperative to do the buffers for ourselves, embodying and modeling the buffers that promote health before urging someone else to align their values with actions. Along the way, we will discuss the 6 buffers and their specific contributions to health, explore the two components of the behavioral buffer and its neurobiology, and learn tools for moving forward in purposeful ways toward understanding the buffer rhythms and the things that interfere with them (e.g., barriers).

About the Presenter:

Dr. Camille Kolu is a behavioral scientist and BCBA-D in Denver, Colorado. She is the owner of Cusp Emergence, a private practice in which she joins families and agencies to engineer behavioral cusps for individuals and their loved ones.  After training, supervision and work at the University of North Texas, Dr. Kolu earned a Ph.D. in Biopsychology and Behavioral Neuroscience at Rutgers University, where she developed neurobiological animal models of autism and examined olfactory and social contextual conditioning. Dr. Kolu practices behavior analysis across the lifespan with individuals and families affected by autism, foster care or adoption, mental illness, and/or developmental and intellectual disabilities. She partners with health and human service agencies, mental hospitals, schools, community centered boards, and the University of Colorado Denver, where she enjoys designing and teaching courses in behavior analysis and ethics. Dr. Kolu has published in peer-reviewed journals, and serves on the advisory board of the Cambridge Center for Behavioral Studies. She is active in local behavior analytic groups. Dr. Kolu explores research interests in verbal communities of reinforcement and stimulus schedules in the everyday interactions of families affected by disruption or trauma, while using her private practice to provide training, education, and behavior analytic mentorship and supervision.

Learning Objectives:

Session 1 objectives:
  1. State the 6 buffers and how they relate to health
  2. Use a self assessment tool to understand our current buffer engagement
  3. State a key distinction between using the terms “trauma” and “ACES” in terms of the preventive buffer approach
Session 2 objectives:
  1. Use a self assessment tool to understand our barriers
  2. Identify a key area to move forward in adding buffering and resolving a barrier
  3. State a way to implement the behavioral buffer strategy in our own life
