- Connections Behavior Planning and Intervention welcomes James Kidwell, Chelsea Mcadams , BCBA, for an online webinar on using ABA in everyday life.
-
Abstract:
Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) is often associated with clinical services for individuals with developmental disabilities. While this work is essential and impactful, the science of behavior extends far beyond any single population or service setting. The principles of ABA describe how behavior changes in response to environmental conditions, making them relevant to nearly every domain of human activity.
“ABA is Everywhere: Bridging Behavioral Theory and Everyday Life” explores how foundational behavioral principles—such as reinforcement, punishment, conditioned motivating operations, stimulus control, shaping, rule-governed behavior, contingency shaped behavior, extinction, and more—all operate in everyday environments including our homes, schools, workplaces, healthcare settings, consumer behavior, and public policy. Through real-world examples and interactive analysis, participants will examine how behavioral contingencies shape actions in contexts ranging from parenting routines and classroom instruction to workplace performance systems and everyday decision making.
The presentation highlights how behavior analysts can use the conceptual tools of ABA to interpret and influence behavior across diverse environments while maintaining ethical practice, cultural responsiveness, and social validity. Participants will engage in guided analyses of common scenarios, identify behavioral contingencies in natural settings, and explore how behavior-analytic thinking can support meaningful outcomes across communities.
By reframing ABA as a universal science of behavior rather than a discipline tied to a single population, this session aims to expand how professionals conceptualize the reach and relevance of behavior analysis in everyday life.
About the Presenter:
James F. Kidwell is a behavior analyst, educator, and consultant with more than two decades of experience supporting individuals, families, and systems through the application of applied behavior analysis (ABA). He currently serves as a Founder and Owner of Connections Behavior Planning & Intervention, where he provides clinical leadership, program development, and consultation to support meaningful behavioral and educational outcomes across home, school, and community settings.
James began his career as a special education teacher in the Glendale Unified School District, where he worked for eight years supporting students with diverse learning and behavioral needs. His work in education led to a deep focus on function-based intervention, positive behavior supports, and systems that improve outcomes for both students and educators.
In addition to clinical practice, James has contributed to the training of future educators and behavior analysts as an instructor at Seattle University and the University of Washington, teaching courses on behavioral interventions, emotional and behavioral disorders, and instructional methods for students with disabilities. His research and conference presentations have focused on topics such as classroom management, tertiary behavior supports, and the implementation of evidence-based practices within school systems.
Through clinical work, teaching, research, and consultation, Kidwell’s career has focused on translating behavioral science into practical strategies that improve daily life for individuals, families, and communities.
Learning Objectives:
By the end of the session, participants will:
-
Identify at least three core principles of applied behavior analysis that operate in everyday environments outside of clinical service delivery.
-
Analyze common real-world scenarios by identifying antecedents, behaviors, and consequences that influence human behavior.
-
Describe how behavioral contingencies influence behavior across multiple domains such as education, parenting, workplace systems, and consumer behavior.
-
Generate at least one behavior-analytic intervention strategy that could improve outcomes in a non-clinical everyday setting.
-
Evaluate potential ethical considerations when applying behavior analytic principles outside traditional service settings.
