Course Abstract

Urinary and bowel incontinence is a significant threat to quality of life for many people with developmental disabilities, compromising personal autonomy, community inclusion, physical comfort and hygiene, and acceptance by peers. In this workshop, we will systematically address best practice in toilet training consultation with families and teaching teams, including: systematic intervention planning, identifying and overcoming barriers to success, troubleshooting unexpected problems, maintenance of skill and generalization across settings. This presentation will include a review of data collection and analysis procedures, considerations related to difficult training environments, and the use of moisture alarms as a viable alternative to standard behavioral intervention.

Learning Objectives

  1. Participants will identify key considerations in the process of individualized assessment and planning of toilet training interventions for persons with developmental disabilities.
  2. Participants will recognize the most common barriers to success in toilet training, as well as adaptive supports that aid in overcoming these barriers.
  3. Participants will demonstrate knowledge of specific training techniques essential for parents and teachers
  4. Participants will identify risks to training success and related troubleshooting strategies
