ACT in Behavior Analysis: An Overview of the Brief ACT Functional Analysis with Amanda Chastain and Dr. Jordan Belisle

Amanda Chastain, BCBA, & Dr. Jordan Belisle, BCBA-D

Connections Behavior Planning and Intervention welcomes Amanda Chastain, BCBA, and Dr. Jordan Belisle, BCBA-D, for a webinar on Acceptance and Commitment Therapy for BCBA’s!

Abstract:

There has been growing interest in Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) within the applied behavior analytic community for use with multiple populations. ACT may be an appropriate intervention framework when working with verbally advanced individuals whose verbal behavior (i.e., rule governed behavior) participates in behavior patterns that are inconsistent with their chosen values.   We will review ACT as it can be implemented by Board Certified Behavior Analysts (BCBAs) with an emphasis on the on-going interaction between behavior and context. The theoretical underpinnings of ACT are derived from well-established behavioral theories and applied research is well underway. We will also review a brief ACT functional analytic framework from which to guide ACT interventions when implemented by behavior analysts.

About the Presenters:

Amanda Chastain, BCBA, completed her master’s degree at California State University, Sacramento, where her research and training was centered around stimulus equivalence and Skinner’s analysis of verbal behavior. Ms. Chastain recently spent time working as a Senior Research Associate in the ABA lab at the University of Southern California and as a Program Director at FirstSteps for Kids where she received supervision in Acceptance and Commitment Training. She currently serves as a Research Associate in the ACT/Prosocial Research Lab and is simultaneously obtaining her Doctorate in Rehabilitation Sciences at the University of Illinois at Chicago under the supervision of Dr. Mark Dixon and Dr. Tamar Heller. Her current research focuses on complex verbal behavior, Relational Frame Theory, and Acceptance and Commitment Training.

Dr. Jordan Belisle, BCBA-D, is a Board Certified Behavior Analyst and Assistant Professor at Missouri State University. He has published over 80 peer-reviewed papers and book chapters, applying advances in our understanding of human language and cognition to improve the lives of people. This work has included research on neurological disabilities such as autism as well as behavioral addictions and applications of behavior science to solve climate change. Since joining the faculty at Missouri State University, Belisle’s work has focused on developing new models of human language learning, including Relational Density Theory, that describes the apparent self-organization of relational verbal behavior. His research lab seeks to provide research opportunities for students and to collaborate at an international scale with practitioners looking to infuse science within practice. Behavior Analysis tomorrow cannot be the same as yesterday.

Learning Objectives:

  1. Describe the six ACT core processes from a behavior analytic perspective
  2. Use the ACT Matrix as an indirect assessment to identify inflexible verbal behavioral influencing a target behavior
  3. Describe how the Brief ACT FA can be used to guide an individualized ACT intervention
