Connections Behavior Planning and Intervention welcomes Adrienne Bradley, BCBA, President of BABA and host of the Shades of ABA Podcast, to outline an ACT-based approach to staff supervision in behavior analysis.

About the Presenter

My name is Adrienne Bradley, and I have been a Board Certified Behavior Analyst since 2018. However, my passion for helping children with autism started long before that. After I graduated from Central Michigan University in 2014, I started working in the public school system. While I was there, I saw how much of a need there was for students who were diagnosed with autism. This is where my love of Applied Behavior Analysis began.

I decided to go back to school, and started my Masters program at Wayne State University, focusing on Education Psychology with an emphasis on Applied Behavior Analysis. After graduating in 2016, I gained even more experience working with people on the autism spectrum in home, school, and clinic settings. I also did a lot of research, focusing on ACT, parent training, supervision, and diversity, equity, and inclusion within Applied Behavior Analysis. This led me to teaching others about ABA – I’m currently an adjunct professor at Wayne State University, helping to educate the next generation of behavior analysts.

I have also taken time to focus on other things, namely providing education and experiences to disseminate ABA to underserved communities. I co-host the “Shades of ABA” podcast, where we discuss diversity, equity, and inclusion in the ABA field. I have also had the opportunity to be the president of Black Applied Behavior Analysts (BABA), which aims to reduce barriers for African American students, professionals, and parents within the ABA community.

Abstract

This event will be divided into two separate presentations, held two weeks apart. Participation in both sessions is required for CEU credit.

SESSION 1: Growth of Behavior Analysis – Utilizing ACT to develop leadership skills

Applied Behavior Analysis has been identified as one of the fastest growing medical and behavioral health industries (Carr 2022). The BACB has reported BCBA has had a 62% growth rate over the last 5 years (BACB 2023). This includes an age range of 18-34 making up 65% of the field. With the current demographic data, leaders within the field must be intentional, ethical, and progressive towards developing the next generation of BACB certificates. The current field’s reputation amongst the larger community, first starts the development of different leaders across all employee levels. Within this presentation, the audience will be able to learn and apply different tools and strategies that can improve intentional leadership development across all levels of employees.

Learning Objectives

  1. Attendees will identify growth areas of need in Applied Behavior Analysis
  2. Attendees will identify an applicable areas of improvement under Leadership Development
  3. Attendees will identify leadership scenarios as they apply to principles within Acceptance and Commitment Therapy

SESSION 2: ACT & Leadership Development – Creating our Personal Improvement Project

With the growth of certified behavior analyst and Registered Behavior Technicians, we must take an intentional focus on developing ourselves and the next generation of BACB certificants. Part II of the leadership series will allow for attendees to utilize ACT base principles to develop their own leadership plan. Creating a Personal Improvement Project (PIP) will be the focus during the class. Attendees will be able to be charged with identifying current barriers and solutions, using ACT, to improve one-two leadership skills.
