Connections Behavior Planning and Intervention welcomes Adrienne Bradley, BCBA, President of BABA and host of the Shades of ABA Podcast, to present on Ethical Parent Training in Behavior Analysis.

About the Presenter

My name is Adrienne Bradley, and I’m Clinical Director in our Detroit region. I have been a Board Certified Behavior Analyst since 2018, and have worked with Behavior Frontiers since January 2020. However, my passion for helping children with autism started long before that. After I graduated from Central Michigan University in 2014, I started working in the public school system. While I was there, I saw how much of a need there was for students who were diagnosed with autism. This is where my love of Applied Behavior Analysis began.

I decided to go back to school, and started my Masters program at Wayne State University, focusing on Education Psychology with an emphasis on Applied Behavior Analysis. After graduating in 2016, I gained even more experience working with people on the autism spectrum in home, school, and clinic settings. I also did a lot of research, focusing on ACT, parent training, supervision, and diversity, equity, and inclusion within Applied Behavior Analysis. This led me to teaching others about ABA – I’m currently an adjunct professor at Wayne State University, helping to educate the next generation of behavior analysts.

I have also taken time to focus on other things, namely providing education and experiences to disseminate ABA to underserved communities. I co-host the “Shades of ABA” podcast, where we discuss diversity, equity, and inclusion in the ABA field. I have also had the opportunity to be the president of Black Applied Behavior Analysts (BABA), which aims to reduce barriers for African American students, professionals, and parents within the ABA community.

Abstract

During a Behavior Analyst career there will be many situations in which we are not only working with an individual client but also working with their support system. Many instances that support the system are parents and/or guardians. With 72% of the BACB certificants working in the area of Autism (BACB 2022) and due to the COVID-19 Pandemic, parent training and involvement is a consistent role requirement. With the current service model of ABA in the Autism community, many parents are only consistently interacting with clinicians of their children’s team. For Behavior Analysts working in underserved communities there also may be opportunities that will require the clinician to be a part of the parents support system. With an ethics code indicating dual relationships should not be established and meeting the needs of our families, what are the ethical considerations Behavior Analyst should make when working with the underserved and under-resourced population? In this presentation, Behavior Analyst will learn to conduct risk, benefit, analysis with everyday applied scenarios when working parents/guardians and ethical decision making.
