Abstract:
Pica is a challenging behavior characterized by the consumption of non-food items or the compulsive eating of both edible and non-edible substances. Individuals who display pica have been found to eat items such as glass, cigarettes, pebbles, excessive amounts of non-edible substances like ice or baking soda, and non-edible plants. This workshop will review the etiological models for pica (e.g., behavioral analytic, nutritional) and summarize the evidence for each. An intervention model for people with pica in community settings that merges medical, nutritional, and behavioral interventions for pica will be presented. Finally, the behavioral assessment and intervention strategies for pica will be reviewed, with a focus on the degree to which they are evidence-based and their application in various settings, including schools, homes, and residential settings.

About the Presenter:
Dr. David McAdam is Associate Professor in the Department of Pediatrics, Developmental & Behavioral Pediatrics (SMD) at the University of Rochester Medical Center in Rochester, NY. His professional training is in the areas of behavior analysis and developmental disabilities including autism and intellectual disabilities. His clinical interests include behavioral interventions for challenging behavior, strategies for increasing the quality of life of persons with developmental disabilities, and teaching independent living skills. His research interests include the functional assessment and analysis of challenging behavior, preference assessment methods for persons with severe developmental disabilities, and interventions to increase the functional engagement of persons with disabilities in community-based settings such as group homes and employment settings.
