Abstract
Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) is a is an evidence-based third-wave behavioral treatment that rests upon the idea that people’s problems may worsen when they try to control or eliminate feelings or thoughts. ACT is used as a wrap-around to traditional applied behavior analysis for several reasons. These reasons include making the ABA more acceptable for both the clinician and client and increasing generalizability of the results of the ABA practice context. The majority of this 2-hour webinar will be devoted to helping behavior analysts who work with children who have autism with relatively low support needs. Direct techniques for increasing response generalization for perspective taking and other important skills will be provided. Indirect strategies that address clinician factors that make long-term success more likely will also be emphasized. Participants are encouraged to bring de-identified case information to inform this illustrative experience.
Learning Objectives
Participants at this event will:
- Discuss how experiential avoidance may interfere with client skills generalization
- Perform an ACT-consistent self-compassion exercise specific to clinician lack of flexibility
- Identify at least two techniques related to increasing social and/or emotion regulation skill generalization
