Connections Behavior Planning and Intervention is excited to welcome Dr. Mary Jane Weiss, BCBA-D, for a webinar for Behavior Analysts! This event will address collaboration between ABA providers and other professionals to maximize outcomes for our shared clients.
Abstract (Please Note – although ‘Ethics’ is in the title for this event, no ‘Ethics’ credits are provided.)
Collaboration is a critical component of interdisciplinary team treatment, and is mandated by the complex needs of individuals with ASD. For all team members, collaboration presents several common challenges. Working with individuals from other disciplines involves addressing differences in worldview, in the definition of evidence, and in the concept of evidence-based practice. The successful navigation of these challenges leads to more effective team processes and improved outcomes for clients. Flexibility is needed when dealing with other disciplines. Understanding differences of perspective and treatment requires a functional assessment of those positions, which will suggest ways that team members can maximize collaborative efforts and maximize client success. Sample dilemmas and helpful resources will be reviewed. Special attention will be paid to both the navigation of dilemmas regarding interventions that pose risk (i.e., have been documented to be harmful or ineffective) and to the navigation of dilemmas around interventions that are not yet empirically supported. Individual and organizational strategies that can assist in achieving successful team resolutions will be highlighted.
About the Presenter
Mary Jane Weiss, Ph.D., BCBA-D, LABA is a Professor at Endicott College, where she has been for 10 years, and where she serves as the Executive Director of ABA and Autism Programs, including overseeing the master’s programs in ABA and directing the Ph.D. Program in ABA. She has worked in the field of ABA and Autism for over 35 years. She received her Ph.D. in Clinical Psychology from Rutgers University in 1990 and she became a Board Certified Behavior Analyst in 2000. She previously worked for 16 years at the Douglass Developmental Disabilities Center at Rutgers University. Her clinical and research interests center on defining best practice ABA techniques, exploring ways to enhance the ethical conduct of practitioners, teaching social skills to learners with autism, training staff to be optimally effective at instruction and at collaboration, and maximizing family members’ expertise and adaptation. She serves on the Scientific Council of the Organization for Autism Research, is on the board of Association for Science in Autism Treatment, is a regular contributor to the ABA Ethics Hotline, and is an advisor to the Cambridge Center for Behavioral Studies. She is a regular reviewer for several professional journals, and is a frequent member of service committees for a variety of organizations.

- Describe the need for collaboration across disciplines in the treatment of autism and identify the challenges to collaboration, including differences in definitions of evidence and in worldview
- Identify resources that can assist in navigating dilemmas around non evidence-based interventions and that can assist in identifying collaborative solutions
- List strategies individuals and organizations can use to build skills in successful collaboration
